Johnston, John George

With devoted wife, sons, and daughters-in-law at his side, John passed away at home on January 8, 2021 at the age of 73. Loving husband of Jill (Angela Ognibene) for 50 years.

Cherished father of Sean (Caroline Donaghue) and Sam (Valeria Pugliese). Proud grandfather of Joaquin, Atticus, and Finula. Survived by his sister Pat Shaddock and sadly missed by his sisters-in-law Francesca, Rosemary, and Terry, as well as his extended family and close friends. Predeceased by his father James, mother Olive, and brother James.

After retiring as Regional Director with Canada Customs, John worked as consultant to the Customs services of Egypt, Jamaica, Barbados, Laos, and many other countries. A proud citizen of Fort Erie, he organized the 1812 Bicentennial celebrations, chaired the fundraising committee for the Fort Erie Leisureplex, and spearheaded many other important community initiatives. He played great music and formed lasting friendships as the drummer for the Ultratones and for Steve Burnside and the Marquis.

Services will be held March 21st at 1 pm and can be viewed live on the Benner Funeral Services Facebook page or viewed at your convenience on this obituary page anytime after the conclusion of the Funeral.  If so desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society for research into Liver Cancer would be appreciated by the family.
