Dear Jill and Family,
Both my wife Lisette and I wish to express our deepest sympathies for your loss of John. During this difficult time we hope that your fond memories of John will help you through this difficult time.
John and I worked very closely for over 25 years in Customs and faced many challenges together from his time in Staff Relations and as a Regional Customs Director. During this time we regularly consulted and collaborated with each other, sharing ideas, solving problems, sought and gave advice to each other and became friends.
I will remember John as a mentor to his managers and staff, a supporter of his peers and always willing to suggest and implement ways to advance the Customs program. After our retirement, unfortunately we didn’t connect as often as we wanted, but from time to time we did reach out to discuss our international work and reminisce about Customs. John will be missed and remembered by many. Rest in Peace John.

Dear Jill and Family We were saddened to hear of John's passing. Anyone who knew John well will be left with lasting memories.
I first met John in 1975 when we both worked in the "newly created Hamilton Customs Region'. Since that time we met often over our careers in various work locations in the field and headquarters before we both ended up in Southern Ontario. We both retired within a few years of each other.
Indeed the years have flown by so quickly!
Many years ago Chief Crowfoot described "What is Life" "Life is like the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."

John was a great friend and mentor. He taught me everything I know about management, labor relations, collective bargaining and running a border operation. He taught me how to make well thought out decisions and he challenged us to do just that, all the while keeping a watchful eye on us. He supported me while he was my boss and even after he retired; he was 1 in a million. I was also one of the few that could decipher his handwriting! He also invited me to sing with both bands he played with which I alway held as a special treat. He will be missed so very much and my sincere and deep condolences go to Jill, Sean, Sam and their families. Rest easy John.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of this great man. Although I have known Jill since grade school we only recently met John upon our return to the Buffalo area after living on the west coast for 45 years. We were so looking forward to getting to know him better. What an amazing life he had! Our most sincere condolences go out to Jill and his family. May he rest in peace.

I first met John in Ottawa thru his work with HQ. Immediately, I was drawn to his real and deep understanding of field operations. For many years thru and after his move to Niagara, his stamina and resilience were clear - and always with a twinkle and a chuckle. I send my condolences to the family and thank you for sharing him with us.

John wasn’t only the husband of my lifelong friend Jill, like other spouses of my friends. Although I have only known him since moving back to Buffalo several years ago, visiting at their home, I always felt welcomed and soon realized that time spent with John was filled with intellect, great conversation and memorable stories. I felt blessed to be invited to share holidays with John and Jill; able to witness his deep love for his sons and grandchildren. I also enjoyed many great meals John was a really good cook! So it is with still shocking and a deeply sad heart to say good bye to this man that became more than my friends spouse; I think of him as my big brother. God speed John, it has been a joy to have known you.

I had the good fortune to not only work for John but also worked with his father, brother and his sister Pat. The Johnston family has served Canada well through the CBSA and John through his International Consulting work and his community service. It's sad he had to pass so soon in life at a time when he could enjoy watching his children and grandchildren grow and spend time with them. I am certain he will be missed by all. My condolences to all of the Johnston family. May God bless you all.
A few years ago CBSA bought some refurbished police cruisers to transport impaired drivers from the primary lines. There is a picture of John that immediately came to mind when I heard of his passing. John was driving one of the cruisers down to secondary with all the lights flashing with a huge wave and a smile. That's how I will remember him.

To John's family, please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. John, a colleague and friend over the many years we worked together in the Government of Canada, will be missed. He was superb at coming up with straight-forward solutions to most any challenge. I still use his novel approach to setting deck posts in Ottawa's difficult soil and have shared it shamelessly over the years! Rest in peace John.

Jill and family,
It's hard to find words to ex[press my sympathy for your loss - your loss. Everyone John touched in life was impacted. A great friend of mine for over 40 years; a colleague; traveling companion; story teller; musician (although over all these years I never saw him play!); and loving father and husband (always telling stories about the boys, Jill and the grandkids).
Jill, take care of yourself and the family. I will attend the service for John at all possible.
