Obituary of Margaret Edmunds

EDMUNDS, Willa Margaret Dorothy (Burns) Edmunds (nee Gauley) passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Welland County General Hospital in her 88th year. Margaret was born in Louisa, Quebec on August 10th,1929, one of nine children of the late Thomas Gauley and Elsie Tomalty. She and her husband, Robert moved to Fort Erie in the early 1950's and raised three sons. Margaret was a long time member (66 years) of the Royal Canadian Legion, 60 of which were with Branch 71 in Fort Erie, holding several positions on the executive over the years and also a member of the Fort Erie Fraternal Order of Eagles. She returned to formal education late in life (in her 70's), taking a course in Palliative Care and working with patients in hospital and who needed home care. She was an energetic member of the community who was often found assisting elderly friends by driving them to doctors appointments or to attend outings. She still had her drivers license. Margaret is predeceased by her first husband, Robert W. Burns and second husband, Russell E. Edmunds. Also predeceased by siblings Arthur, Tolbert, Alan, Edgar, Evelyn and Lorna. She is survived by her twin Elizabeth and sister Elva. Also survived by her sons Robert (Dorothy) Burns of Burlington, Ontario, Barry (Maria) Burns of Welland and Dean (Grace) Burns of Edmonton, Alberta, grandchildren Melissa (David) Young, Sarah Burns, Ken Burns, Robin (Craig) Fairchild, Lisa (Joshua) Reaves, David (Amy) Burns and Nathan (Ashley) Burns as well as great grandchildren Alexandria & Joshua Taylor, Abigail & Mia Reaves, Evanny Fairchild and Lorelai Burns. Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Ave, Fort Erie entrusted with arrangements. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be conducted in the Benner Funeral Chapel on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, November 26, 2016. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery at the Canadian Legion Veterans plot. If so desired, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71, Fort Erie, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
