Obituary of Jack Kennedy
John (Jack) Sinclair Kennedy (87 years)
Died peacefully at Greater Niagara General Hospital on Sunday 30th December from heart and lung complications. Jack was the loving husband of 66 years of Eileen (nee Horne). Jack was born in Shelburne, Ontario 30th June 1925. He is mourned by his daughter Susan Dobbin (Stafford) and son Peter (Brigid) and granddaughter Abigail Kennedy (Michael) and his friend Jay. He was previously deceased by his father James, mother Agnes Janet and sister Margaret Bonter.
Jack enlisted in 1943 at the age of 19 in the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment of the Canadian 4th Armored Division, (motto: Fearless in the Face of Danger). He served as a Lance-Corporal in Holland and Germany through 1944-1946. He transferred to the Provost Corp in London in 1946 and met his future wife Eileen who became a war bride traveling to Canada in 1948 on the SS Aquitania.
Jack joined the Ontario Provincial Police in 1950 and served in Niagara Falls, Smithville, Fort Erie, Crystal Beach, and Welland. A founding member of the OPP Veterans Association, he retired as a Corporal in 1982.
Jack was an avid Ham Radio Operator and regularly kept in touch by Ham Radio, and later internet, with some of the Dutch families he had helped to liberate in 1944-45. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Jack was not only a fearless survivor in his youth but also in his later years. He was diagnosed with Gastro-esophageal stomach cancer in 2009 but actually outlived the disease. His family wish to thank the staff of the ICU and Unit D at Greater Niagara General Hospital and especially Dr. KY Chan, Dr. K. Rajagopaul and Dr. B. Bassil for their excellent care in his final illness.
