Obituary of Winston Sims

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Winston (Winnie) Sims on August 31, 2012 at Douglas Memorial Hospital at the age of 70 after a heroic battle with cancer, Son-in-Law Chris by his side. Predeceased by his loving wife and best friend Gisela (2007). Loving father to Peggy (Chris) Boles. Proud Papa to his pride and joys, Sarah and Jake Boles. Brother of Evelyn Riddell, Earl (Elda), Robert, and Gord (Audrey). Predeceased by brothers Fred, Ed, and Charles and sisters, Irene Hawksworth and Jean Bevan. Also survived by mother-in-law Irene Heilig, brother-in-law Mike (Dawn) Heilig and sister-in-law Ursula (John) Deans as well as many nieces and nephews. Winston was a proud 39 year member or the Ridgeway Lions Club and took great pride in his service and accomplishments as a Lion. He served as Club President (1982-83) and Secretary receiving the 100% Secretary's award for 25 consecutive years. He received the Helen Keller and Melvin Jones awards. Winston also applied his hard work and dedication while serving as Regional Counsellor (1994-97). During his term he was vice-chairman of Public Works Committee, member of Community and Health Services Committee, member of Ecological and Environment Advisory Committee, and had the highest attendance record of all counsellors during his term. Winston was also well known as the Umpire in Chief of Fort Erie Baseball for 15 years. He was very proud of his community service. A very generous man always willing to help others. Winnie loved enjoying a cold beer with friends & family or cruising in his "65 T-Bird". He will be greatly missed by all who knew & loved him. Our family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Scher, Dr. Che, the compassionate & caring nurses and the many others that helped care for him during his illness. Also a special thanks to Dianne, Brenda & Debbie for your amazing love & support. Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Ave., Fort Erie entrusted with arrangements. A graveside service will take place at Ridgeway Memorial Cemetery on Saturday September 8th at 1 o’clock. A time of gathering to celebrate Winston’s life will follow at the Ridgeway Lions Club, 99 Ridge Road South, Ridgeway at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Winston’s memory may be made to the Douglas Memorial Palliative Care Unit.
