Obituary of Giuseppe Toppazzini
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Giuseppe "Bepi" Toppazzini. Surrounded by love, Bepi passed away peacefully at Douglas Memorial Hospital on Thursday, December 13, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones. He was 92.
He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Iole, as well as his sons Danny, Eddie (Loredana), Randy, and David (Laura). His is also survived by his 11 grandchildren: Marlo, Patrick, Kristina, Jacob, Matthew, Alex, Sophia, Julia, Ryan, Natalie and Ava. He was our beloved Nono and will be missed beyond measure.
Born and raised in San Daniele del Fruili, a small town in northern Italy, Giuseppe grew up the son of the local shoemaker, Vittorio, and his wife, Madelena. In 1950, Giuseppe left the old country, his parents and 3 sisters, Ada, Elsa and Mariucci, and moved to Fort Erie, Ontario where he married Iole and started his family.
After settling in Fort Erie, Bepi began working for Guy Violino Construction before eventually starting at Horton CBI, where he would ultimately retire from 30 years later. He loved his time there and remembered those days fondly.
Bepi was always active and much to the dismay of his wife, was still riding his bicycle and downhill skiing well into his 80s! He lived his life to the fullest and took nothing for granted. Giving up his season's pass to Kissing Bridge was one of the great sources of sadness in his life. As he got older, he'd dream of the slopes and would often wake up in the morning to tell anyone who would listen that he was in the Alps the previous night. He was a dreamer and we loved him for it.
Above all else, Bepi loved his family. He would carry the names of his grandchildren on a small piece of paper in his wallet so as to not forget anyone should the opportunity arise to brag about them. He could always be counted on to be in the crowd cheering everyone on and supporting them in whatever they did. He loved and was loved well in return. He will be missed but never forgotten.
Thank you to Dr Scher and all the nurses at DMH, as well as the team at the Niagara Falls Dialysis Unit, who were so kind, compassionate and helpful over the past couple years.
Visitation will be held at Benner Funeral Home on Sunday, December 16 from 1pm-4pm and 6pm-9pm. A funeral mass will be held at St Michael's Catholic at 11am December 17 with a reception to follow at Bridgewater Golf and Country Club.
