Obituary of John Leland Campbell
Campbell, John Leland - Passed away Tuesday, November 7th surrounded by his family at Douglas Memorial Hospital. Born in 1927 in Calgary to the late George and Gertrude Campbell and predeceased by his first wife Mary Sheppard Campbell (1966), son Douglas (2010) and a brother Donald. Survived by his loving wife of 48 years Anne (nee Douglas), son Scott (Dairon), daughters Lee Campbell Smith (Leon) and Robin Hall (Mark), daughter-in-law Judy Campbell and brother-in-law Peter Douglas. Lovingly remembered by the constant source of joy in his life- his grandchildren; Alex Campbell, Campbell Smith, Connor Campbell, Carsyn Campbell, Delaney Hall, McKenna Hall, Amy Knobloch and Leon Smith IV. There never was a better Papa!! Always there to support whatever the kids were doing- hockey, golf, softball or gymnastics. He was their biggest fan and showed it.
Affectionately and respectfully referred to as JL, our Father enjoyed a successful career running The George Campbell Company, major roadbuilders in Ontario, with his brother. He was the first Canadian President of The Cherry Hill Club in 1970 instrumental in many of the enhancements that continue to define the beauty of the course today. He co-chaired the Canadian Open in 1972. New members were always welcomed by JL and he assumed a mentoring role that is still talked about and revered by the now more mature members. He was a role model to so many.
Community involvement was an important part of his life. He was a long time member and President of the Fort Erie Kinsman involved in the building of the Kinsman Pool. He chaired the extensive fundraising for the EJ Freeland YMCA which continues to offer programs and services of which our town can be proud. In 1994 he received the honour of a Governor General Award for community service.
When JL moved to Toronto as a young boy he established friendships that endured the span of decades. Known as The Turtles they enjoyed annual "walks" in the fall and ski trips in the winter bringing their families together for fun, food and drink, camaraderie and funny antics always to the benefit of the growing families watching and listening to their parents. They will all be waiting to welcome him..... heaven will never be the same!
While JL's accomplishments were many and impressive they pale in comparison to his ability to embrace people and the impact he had on everyone he met. The consummate gentleman, he was supportive of all and believed in people's ability to do great things and succeed. His magnanimous personality, his charisma and his genuine interest in people will never be forgotten.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Scher and the staff at Douglas Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion extended to JL. In lieu of flowers donations to the Palliative Care Unit would be appreciated by the family.
Private family interment. A celebration of JL"s life will be held June 16th, 2018 at The Cherry Hill Club, Ridgeway, Ontario. Further details will be communicated prior to the celebration.
