Obituary of Joan Mabel Barton
Joan was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, auntie and friend. She passed away peacefully at the Crescent Park Lodge on April 22nd, 2017 at the age of 84. Her legacy lives on in her children, Fred Leyland, Nicky Leyland, Cynthia (Michael) Bennett, Susie (David) Fyke, Paul Barton and Johnny Barton. She leaves lasting memories with her Grandchildren Richie, Lindsay, Jessica, Courtney, Alex, Brittany, Jackie, Davis, Ali and Harrison and with her 8 Great Grandchildren. Cherished sister of David Johns, Judi (Wayne) Spear and Joey (Vi) Johns. Joan is predeceased by her parents William and Rhoda Johns as well as her brothers Jim, Tommy and Mark and her sisters Betti Kraft and Rhoda Mangus. She will be missed by her large extended family and many friends.
Joan believed in and found joy in helping others. As the first aboriginal court worker at the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre, and a founding member of the Niagara Chapter of Native Women and Ganawageh Urban Homes she touched countless lives with her spirit of compassion, kindness and love.
Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Ave., Fort Erie entrusted with arrangements. The family will receive friends on Thursday April 27, at 12:30 until the time of the service at 1pm. A reception will follow. If so desired, donations to the Niagara Chapter of Native Women would be appreciated by the family.
