It is always particularly difficult to see an enthusiast go. I'll always remember his love of the RCBHS teams. I couldn't believe his encouragement for me to join the football team. I enjoyed the whole year even though Port Colborne laid me to waste in the first game. Nick Wise, Metcalfe, ON.

To the Hudak family
Living in Michigan, it is difficult to return to Ontario and sometimes it is difficult to find the right words to express my condolence and appreciation for Pat and his efforts in education. Then it occured that I already had done so in a rough draft of book that I am writing about student athlete experiences in the Bertie School District during the early 1960's. The title of which is: The Team, The Team, The Team!
I had hoped to share many more conversations with Pat. The last time we met was at Tritch's Celebration of Life. I stood at a table with many of Pat's former players having a beer but, the guy next to me kept knocking my elbow off the table. I thought it was by mistake until it happened a third time. Finally I looked to see who this person was and there was Pat's smiling face. Of course I appologized for not recognizing him. We all laughed. It was one of those moments that we all felt close.
“Unexpected” encouragement from Pat Hudak (excerpt from The Team, The Team, The Team!)
I remember the impact of my first phone conversation with Pat Hudak. I had heard of him. Coach Hudak was held in high-regard by legions of young student athletes following my class at RCBHS. Pat is only a few years older than myself. I never had him for a coach as I was well into college when he arrived at RCBHS. However, that phone conversation and his input has always stayed with me.
Several of my closest friends (Terry Lamorie, Pete Strugar, Elvin Elliott and Paul Raymond) knew of Pat but, they never mentioned him to me. However, it was when I introduced myself as one of their teammates, I thought I heard a faint chuckle. “Oh, so you were one of those guys?” he replied with a certain amount of fondness. “So, we are still remembered!” I laughed. Pat could tell that I was proud to have been mentioned as “one of those guys!”.
I became comfortable sharing with Pat the problems I’d encountered during my research and how difficult it had been to collect data. Leaders have a way of allowing others to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. It became obvious to me that Pat was a leader. He understood the power of listening. That’s an essential quality for educators, especially coaches.
“Most successful people I’ve known do more listening than talking.” – Bernard Baruch
We spoke of the importance of interscholastic activities in school. I shared some of my finer student athlete experiences. I had played half-back and pass defense upon zone championship football teams with Lamorie and Strugar. Two at RCBHS (1959 and 62) one at FESS (1963) and a zone basketball title in 1961. Cy Wilkinson (RCBHS) and Bob Borgersen (FESS) were our coaches. It was those coaches who provided the inspiration behind the nomination that Pete Ruch and I hoped to have accepted to our local Sports Wall of (History) Fame. I asked Pat, if he knew Bob Fox.
“Yes, Bob and I are good friends.” came Pat’s immediate response.
“Bob Fox is on my list of persons that I hope to interview. Mr. Fox handed us the trophy that bears his name back in 1962, when me and my teammates played for RCBHS and again in 1963 when we played for FESS. I still have both pictures of it.” I replied.
“Do you know much about him?” Pat inquired. “Did you notice anything about how he walked?”
“Well, I recall Bob Fox as a handsome young man who wore a suit, tie, and trench coat every time he presented the trophy to us. I remember our coach, Cy Wilkinson, telling us a story of Bob Fox, a football player who was injured. The trophy was named after him. That was a long time ago and I’ll admit that I need help remembering those moments.” I said.
“Well” replied Pat. “You might want to research that a bit before you call him.” I realized then, Pat was an extraordinary educator, a motivator. He appreciated history and wanted me to be well informed before I called Mr. Fox. His response was good advice. I took it – one coach to another.
“Bob Fox” Pat said “can provide more zone history about more athletes and zone events than any person I know. He will return your call and he will enjoy hearing from you and the research you are conducting. Stick to your plan. Don’t get discouraged. Your efforts have value. Yes, you will become frustrated even discouraged and you will make mistakes. I guarantee you that. However, you will adapt, adjust accordingly, and succeed.
“It’s not the strongest who will survive but those who can adapt to change.” – Charles Darwin
Research is never perfect, especially at first, nor is it ever final. If, your research is factual and you can make it interesting, people will want to read it. More importantly, the next researcher will pick-up and correct what you may have overlooked or misstated. You will have passed the ball to the next researchers, helping them provide further knowledge of the importance of education.
I was excited. I surged with renewed energy to continue the difficult task of collecting data regarding the history of effort from our coaches and the experience we encountered as student athletes. They represented the efforts of all of our teachers. The Greater Fort Erie Sports Wall of Fame was a special way to showcase and honor their effort and their history.
“Everything you need to accomplish your goal is already in you.” – Pat Hudak

Dear Anne Marie, Tim, Tricia -- and everyone in your own families: With profound sadness I have learned the news of Patrick's (Pat's) death, and I pass along to each and every one of you my heartfelt sympathies. I had the good pleasure of enjoying Pat's company on several occasions, but most particularly when I was in Fonthill, where, of course, Tim and his family celebrated their faith regularly at St. Alexander Church. I remember well the time of Miller's baptism, when we continued on the celebration at their residence "on the riverbank" afterwards. It provided me with a great opportunity to share conversation with Pat (as with all of you), and to become more acquainted with his role in the education field as well as with community life at large. While I could not join you in Fort Erie for the funeral Mass (I had a burial at the same time), still I assure you of my prayers for him and he will be included in the parish's prayers here at St. Thomas More, NF. I extend loving greetings to one and all, knowing that these days must be especially painful for you, given what a loss you've experienced -- and certainly for myself, and all who knew and worked alongside Pat, we will feel keenly his absence. Eternal peace be granted to him, with a blessed reward for his labours on earth. (Fr.) Peter T. Rowe

Dear Anne Marie, Tim and family:
Pat was one of the very first people I met when I came to work at The Times in Fort Erie more than 20 years ago. He was immediately welcoming, and was always willing to share information about the community that I would come to call home.
Pat was one of the kindest souls I have ever met. It's so funny that later in my career that I should cross paths with him again through Lakeshore Catholic, and I was honoured to write his biography for the Niagara Catholic Education Award of Distinction. His speech at the Foundation Gala was one of the best - he had everyone laughing at his storytelling!
It was also nice to come across both Anne Marie and Pat at my cousin Florence's 50th anniversary years ago. It's funny how lives intersect.
Pat's smile could light up a room. These sunny days are no doubt Pat smiling down on the family, friends and communities he loved and served so well.
We are all the better for having had Pat in our lives. Please accept my sincere condolences on what is for us, a community loss, but is for you, far more.

Mrs. Hudak, Tim, Tricia and Family,
My deepest sympathy for your loss. I know these are difficult days but I wanted to let you know that Mr. Hudak was always an inspiration to me growing up. I know I could call him Pat but it just feels odd. I will always remember him as Tim and Tricia's dad ..my neighbor...willing to take me to baseball practices and other activities that kept Tim and I busy all year round. Always positive, never quick to anger and ready to laugh and share a smile. Then there is the smell of the pipe he liked to enjoy every now and then. Any time I smell a pipe it brings me back to those memories. It has been mentioned by many but he has truly left a legacy that will endure for for generations. I know you are mourning but I do hope that you can find joy in his life, peace in knowing that he loved you all and rest in the knowledge that he is once again strong and vibrant in heaven. I am so sorry I can't be there but I am unfortunately quarantining after taking Kaiya back to University. That being said I will continue to keep all of you in my prayers.

You are in our heart and prayers at this time of farewell to your beloved Pat.
As relatively new friends, your refreshing energy and personality has indeed been a gift, which you proceeded to share by introducing Pat to us.
Although we were only in his company once he was indeed a very special soul.
He projected a very bright light sharing his smile and obvious personality despite any illness and his love and respect for you was evident.
We were looking forward to cribbage and the stories of tennis championships this autumn but know we will still share it all within the peace of heaven someday soon.

I have so many memories of Pat - all positive. One from the recent past was he and I singing "Proud Mary" at Bridgewater - he couldn't stand too well but never missed a note. I played the song in my car yesterday in his honour. Pat was a gifted athlete, educator, coach without equal, great father and grandfather and a true and dedicated partner to Anne-Marie throughout their lives together; but what he really starred at was being a genuine, caring and highly principled friend to everyone he encountered in his lifetime. These past few years have been so tough but I was struck by the dignity and poise Pat continued to display during those times. Heather and I are both so sad that he is gone but comfortable in knowing his suffering has come to an end. He will be in our memories forever and will truly make Heaven a better place.
Finally, one would be totally remiss in not recognizing the strength of Anne-Marie, his life partner extraordinaire until the very last moment. He could not have been in better or in more caring hands.

He was always willing to try anything we introduced to the little group and rallied all to do the same. The ‘coach’ in him I suspect.
