Obituary of John Gurnham

May 14, 1921 - September 24, 2016 John passed away at the Douglas Memorial Hospital on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the age of 95. Loving husband of the late Marjorie (Oct. 20, 2015). Proud father of Bob (Mona) and Hugh (Cindy). Loving grandfather to Jonathan, Alexander, Kathryn (Ben Wright), and Laura. Great grandfather to Samuel Wright. Predeceased by his sister, Margaret Lamb. Many extended family members who all share Perce, Quebec as a special place. Following service in the Merchant Marine in WW2, John graduated from McGill University in Electrical Engineering. His working life took him to Cornwall, Brantford, Preston and finally Owen Sound, where he and Marjorie enjoyed life for over 50 years. He was an active member of several professional associations relating to electricity generation and distribution in the province of Ontario. John retired in 1986 but continued to be active in the community. He was president of the Rotary Club and the Owen Sound Golf and Country Club. Golf and skiing were two of his favorite pasttimes. He and Marjorie travelled widely. John will be remembered as a gentleman to the end, whose sense of humour, integrity, and generosity was an example to all. He was an avid reader who enjoyed family gatherings and discussions around the dinner table. In honour of John's wishes, cremation has been taken place. His family will celebrate his life in early October. For those who cannot attend, but want to honour him, we request that you do so privately and in your own way - raise a glass of your favourite beer, wine or scotch, play a game of golf in his honour, or just perform an act of kindness for a stranger.
