Obituary of Ted Backshall

In Loving Memory of Albert Edward “Ted” Backshall

Surrounded by his loving wife of 70 years, Sylvia Hannah, and close family, Ted passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19th, at Niagara Long Term Care Residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

He will be deeply missed by his sisters Dorothy (Chuck) Allen, Elaine (Darrow) Holler, and Bonnie (Ken) Mehlenbacher; his children David, Donald (Donna), Douglas (Kelly), and James (Marni); and his grandchildren Corbin (Dani), Bronson (Becca), Dylan, Adam, Nicolas, and Ashley, along with many nieces and nephews.

Ted is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Lillian, and his stepmother, Margaret, and twin sister Betty (Bernie) Lonie, and now reunited with them in Heaven.

A lifelong believer in community service, Ted dedicated 32 years to teaching at Fort Erie Secondary School. He served more than 60 years with the Fort Erie Lions Club, volunteered with Douglas Heights Senior Centre, and held board positions with the Fort Erie 337 Squadron Air Cadets, Central Avenue United Church, People’s Memorial United Church, and many other community organizations.

Ted also proudly served in the Lincoln & Welland Regiment militia for 18 years, attaining the rank of Captain.

In his youth, Ted was an accomplished and passionate musician, playing trumpet in several dance bands during the Swing Era. His deep love of music, education, and community helped shape Fort Erie—and enriched the lives of all who knew him.
