Obituary of Janice Gail House

Janice Gail House, Mother, Sister and friend to all she met, passed peacefully on May 28, 2025 surrounded by her family. Janice or “Jan” as she was affectionately known, grew up in Welland, Ontario and settled in Stevensville, Ontario where she established lifelong roots and nurtured her family. Janice was unmatched in the love she gave to her children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the lessons in empathy and kindness that she passed on to them.

Janice married her high school sweetheart, Gary House and the two were wed for 58 wonderful years. In that time she had two children, Kim and Michael and deeply loved her four grandchildren, Devyn, Keaton, Declan and Brian. She also shared a special bond with her daughter-in-Law, Kristin.

Janice was born to William and Mercilene Storm on January 19, 1948. As one of nine siblings, she well understood the need to be quick to the bathroom if she wanted to have time to prepare. Janice is survived by her siblings, Sharon (John), Pat (Dan), Jocelyn (George) and Karen, and brother in law Kevin House (Lynn) and sister in law Iva Woods. She is predeceased by her brothers Mel (Gayle), David and Larry and her sister Joan.

Jan had a deep love of sport and fondly recalled her days playing slow pitch in Fort Erie and track and field during her high school years. Janice also loved playing darts at the Fort Erie Legion and 5 Pin bowling at Carrol’s lanes where she held many high scores. She could always be found watching her beloved Blue Jays and Buffalo Bills and like all fans of these franchises, she took their performances in stride.

She had a deep sense of community and supported many local non profits through her volunteer work at bingos. She also supported the local bingos through her regular patronage, except when she won, which happened regularly to her joy. Janice was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 230 Ladies Auxiliary for over 25 years and was a regular fixture at their events. Janice loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with her dear husband. In her journeys near and far, she made fast friends with all she met.

The family would like to thank the staff of Welland Hospital and Douglas Memorial Palliative Care Unit (Dr. Scher and his amazing team!). The family would also like to send heartfelt appreciation to all who visited her during her hospitalization including her extended family of dear friend Tammy and Delcie.

Visitation for Janice will take place on Wednesday June 4th at Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Avenue in Fort Erie from 2-4 pm and 6-8pm. Her service will be held on Thursday June 5th at 11 am at the Funeral Home, followed by her inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery on Thompson Road. Friend are then invited to a gathering at the Royal Canadian Legion in Ridgeway (Branch 230) at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, her family asks the donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Palliative Unit of Douglas Memorial Hospital.
