I first knew Joan, of course, as a prominent and active citizen - successful REALTOR, Chair of the Peace Bridge Authority among other high profile positions. But I really got to know her when I walked into the PC Campaign office in 1993 to help elect Bradd Wilson after Girve Fretz had retired.
Joan was in charge of the Fort Erie office. She had her system and she ran it like a well oiled machine. I asked to get involved in the campaign. She looked me up and down, held my gaze, and put me through a bit of a inquiry. She thought she was on the scent of a Liberal spy.
Joan knew the town cold, where people lived, most family names and somehow, some way knew how most people voted. And in her mind the Hudak Family were Liberal red.
Joan first put me to work near her desk stuffing envelopes so she could keep an eye on me. After proving myself to some extent, I graduated to highlighting voter lists in blue, red or orange to line up with Party affiliation. Joan then had me go through the phone book to match numbers to voter rolls. Finally I graduated to making phone calls to solicit support and secure the ground campaign treasure: lawn signs.
Satisfied that I was “a worker”, that I had not slipped sensitive campaign materials into my pocket and spirited them to a den of Grits down Highway 3, nor taken suspicious trips to the photocopier, Joan gave me the nod. I had won her blessing to go out door to door with the candidate.
I had passed the Joan Brunt loyalty test.
And thank the Lord I did.
Joan and Bill became my most loyal supporters. Dedicated, driven, wise. Generous. And, boy, were they “workers.”
Joan suffered no fools. She always gave it to me straight. If I screwed up, she let me know. And fast!
If I did well, she would have a smile of quiet pride and nudge me to do more.
I never would have won the PC nomination in 1995 let alone the general election and those that followed without Joan and Bill.
More importantly they treated us like family. They loved Debbie - giving her more than a few tips - and embraced Miller and Maitland. Joan gave Miller a beautiful white dress that came from Olive Diefenbaker.
Joan had steel in her spine and love in her heart.
John and Bill and the Brunt family, we extend our deepest condolences on your loss. We were blessed to have so many happy memories of Joan and Bill. No doubt the grandchildren will take great pride on the mark they left on Fort Erie, the PC Party and the lives of so many.

What a blow to lose both parents so close together ... however, I am glad Joan is no longer suffering. Our paths crossed many times since my arrival in Fort Erie in 1965. Have scores of fond memories. I am sorry for the the family's great loss.

Joan was a kind and generous neighbour sharing her plants and advice about gardening. I will remember the many car rides to our Garden Club of Niagara meetings and functions. She was not only an inspiration but a good friend. You will be missed.

Our deepest sympathies on the passing of our beloved Joanie B. Bill and Joan were a true team in everything that mattered- right to the end. Joan was a strong woman leader - in business and politics - well before many were ready for it but that didn't matter to her. She taught me so many life lessons over the years. I will always remember fondly enjoying a glass of wine on the porch while we got caught up on life and times - and in the new house on her porch with the "jealousy glass windows" she loved so much. We will miss them both. In sympathy, Carrie Kormos and Derek Tupling

Our hearts are with you all at this unimaginably difficult time. It was in recent years that I would see Joan at the Garden Club of Niagara where she had brought in new members to enjoy the group and activities. Between the Parkway Sailing Club, the Garden Club and I understand so many other groups, they will be missed by many. Our sincere condolences.

We send our sympathy to the families. Joan and Bill were lovely people who showed genuine interest in the lives of those around them. We will miss the engaging conversations we had at family gatherings. They always took an interest in our family and our careers and took real pleasure in spirited conversation. Their commitment to community and civic engagement was obvious and admirable. They will be missed.

With great sorrow I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to the Brunt and Walton families.
I have numerous memories of Mrs. B. She had been an immense part of my life since I was four years old. So many memories at the house, Grand Bend, flying to England together to see her son, my best friend Billy. That's just to name a few. I could go on and on. Truth be told she treated me like a son. Always looking out and caring for me. As years passed I saw less of her but when I did it was always special. She was always concerned and interested in my parents, my wife Jayne and my children.
Mrs. B was genuine and strong in her convictions. She worked tirelessly to raise her two successful sons. I was able to see first hand how she handle that challenge. My heart breaks for both Billy and John at this unusually difficult time. Please find comfort in knowing your mom is at peace and in a much better place along with your dad.
Love to you all,
David, Jayne, Jack and Grace Healy

Dear Bill, John & Families,
Losing both parents in a matter of days, a blow nobody wants.
Given their ages and infirmities it is a blessing that their journey has ended and they are together forever.
Our Friends Bill & Joan will always have a special place in our hearts.
My years on the Niagara Parks Commission with Joan will always be remembered. From that time on Sandy and I enjoyed times in their company.
Our condolences to all.
Sincerely,
Frank & Sandy Leslie

We shall all miss this dear friend. To me, she was also a mentor and fine example of strength and determination. Her husband and family came first, but her loyalty went beyond this, to strongly serve and support the causes and people she believed in.
Sincerest condolences.
